Handles, latches and hinges: the only moving parts in a yacht interior

A cabin door on the lower deck has to be pulled before it will catch. It did not used to.

Below decks, almost nothing moves. A bulkhead is a surface. So is a lining, a sole, a drawer front, a panel of book-matched veneer. They stay flat, stay light, hold their fire rating and come off again when somebody needs what is behind them. In ten years not one of them is worked. None has a duty cycle.

The handles, the latches and the hinges are the whole of the exception. This is the accommodation: cabin and heads doors, wardrobe catches, drawer pulls, the grab handles in an alleyway. Deck fittings belong to the weathertight envelope, a separate scope and a different argument, and nothing here is powered. A cabin door in charter service is opened and closed a few thousand times a season, and over a decade its lever has been worked more times than her main engines have been started in her life. A yacht door hardware refit is the one part of an interior scope where the number that matters is how many times a thing has been used.

That way of reading exists already, in the file that leaves with her; it has simply never come indoors. Outside the accommodation a yard works this way as a matter of course: a shaft measured this docking against the figure from the last, an anode read as a trend between two liftings. The interior is read as weight, as a fire boundary, as a moisture problem and as access to what is behind it — four true things, none of them wear.

Where the finish goes before anything else

An electroplated finish does not wear evenly. A lacquered panel dulls across its whole face. A lever goes in one place: a crescent on the underside, a hand's width out from the rose, where the pad of a palm lands and pulls. That crescent is through to base metal while the rest of the lever is still perfect, and what is under it stands in salt-laden air with a wet hand on it several times a day.

So hardware photographs better than it is. From the doorway the lever is a shape against timber, and the wear is on the one surface the camera never sees. A polished finish shows the crescent as a bright patch; a matt black shows it as a shine, which reads as nothing until that lever is set beside the one on the next door.

A latch slackens before it fails

A latch rarely fails outright. What happens is slack. The follower, the square seat the spindle drives, opens up under a decade of small torques; the lever picks up a few degrees of free movement before the bolt withdraws; the return spring tires at about the same time. The bolt still throws and the door still shuts, but it has to be pulled towards the frame while the lever is turned, and later pulled hard.

How that arrives at a yard is the useful part. Not as a hardware fault, because nobody aboard thinks of a latch as a component, but as a joinery complaint: the door in cabin four binds, the frame has moved. The joinery is opened up, at joinery prices, and the joinery is fine. The fault is a small brass case reporting its own cycle count honestly.

The test takes a second. Lift the door slightly on its handle and try the catch again. If it catches lifted, the hanging is the answer. If it still has to be pulled, the mechanism is.

How a door drops into its reveal

A veneered cabin door is heavy — a core, two faces, lippings, sometimes a mirror — and all of it hangs on two or three bearings that wear one way only, because the load is always down. The door descends. Not much. Enough.

What it descends into is the reveal. That gap is proved on the jig in the shed before the set goes aboard, because it can only be got right once, and on a finished set it is two or three millimetres. A worn bearing takes a fraction of a millimetre a year out of it, until the door touches its frame at the top of the closing stile and sweeps the sole at the bottom.

The consequence is diagnostic. A door that binds in August is read aboard as timber taking up moisture, and sometimes it is exactly that. A door that binds all year, at one corner rather than along a whole edge, is a bearing. The knuckles will say which.

The reveal between two faces, set true on the jig and only got right once. Two or three millimetres of it, and a tired bearing takes a fraction of a millimetre a year out of the top corner; the season it finally closes, the fault gets reported as joinery.

Opened and closed, not looked at

Ironmongery cannot be surveyed by looking at it. Every fitting here is a mechanism, so the inspection is a cycle: the lever worked through its travel and back, the drawer run out and in, the catch made and broken. What gets recorded is free movement, effort, and the difference between one cabin and the next.

The convenient moment is early. At strip-down every door is off its frame and every drawer out of its carcass, for reasons that have nothing to do with hardware. The interior survey already catalogues hardware separately from the panels, which is where this becomes a scope rather than a line inside somebody else's.

  • The underside of every lever felt rather than viewed, because that is where the finish goes first
  • Each latch worked on the bench, flat and with nothing bearing on it, since one that throws cleanly there is pointing at the hanging
  • Solid ground behind a hinge, answered by taking one off rather than by looking at the door

Match one cabin, or re-hardware the vessel

A twenty-year-old yacht's pattern is out of production, which is close to a rule. What arrives is a request to replace the handles in cabin four; what has to be answered is whether she keeps a consistent set.

Two routes, both costing something. Chase a match for the one cabin, and the set stays whole in principle while the new fittings never quite agree with their neighbours under that cabin's lighting. Or re-hardware throughout, which agrees with itself and loses the original detail on doors sometimes made around it.

Reaching that decision needs a number nobody holds. Door sets, drawer pulls, wardrobe catches and grab handles: until they are counted by cabin, hardware sits in a quotation as a rounding error against the joinery. The maker, pattern, backset, spindle and finish for each set belong on that count rather than in somebody's memory.

The line that gets struck first

None of this shows in a photograph of a finished cabin, which is why it is the first line struck when a scope comes down. Nobody aboard will look at a latch case. They will work it, ten times a day for ten years, and no other line in the interior can say that.

Work one door before you write

Work one door first: turn the lever slowly and note where the free movement starts, then lift the door on its handle and try the catch again, and tell us what changed between the two. Take off one faceplate while you are there and photograph the back of it together with the latch case, where a maker's mark and a pattern number are usually stamped. Photograph a cabin door hung and closed, sighted along the reveal from the hinge side, which shows drop that a photograph of the cabin will not. Then list what is aboard by cabin — door sets, drawer pulls, wardrobe catches, grab handles — and say which cabins an earlier yard has already re-hardwared, because a vessel halfway through a set decision is a different job from one that has not started.
