Anti-fouling, and where the runoff goes

Containment, filtration and an audited waste stream — and the coating decision that quietly sets next season's fuel bill.

Anti-fouling is treated as a maintenance chore and priced like one. It is neither. It is the coating decision with the clearest, most measurable effect on operating cost, and it is the one with the largest environmental footprint per litre applied.

The fuel argument

A fouled hull is a rough hull, and roughness costs power. The relationship is not linear and it is not gentle: modest fouling produces a disproportionate increase in resistance, which the engines answer with fuel. Over a season, on a vessel that actually cruises, the difference between a sound anti-fouling system and a tired one is a meaningful number on the fuel account.

Which means the honest way to evaluate an anti-fouling quotation is not price per litre. It is expected service life against the vessel's actual operating profile — where she lies, how warm the water is, how much of the season she spends stationary. A boat that sits in a warm marina for eight months has an entirely different fouling problem from one that runs.

Anti-fouling is not a paint purchase. It is a fuel decision with a paint invoice attached.

Preparation decides the life

  • What is underneath. Anti-fouling adheres to the system below it, not to the hull. Applying fresh coats over a failing or contaminated scheme buys a season and costs a full strip later.
  • Accumulated film. Years of coats build thickness that eventually cracks and sheets away, taking sound material with it. There is a point at which removal is cheaper than another layer, and it arrives earlier than most owners are told.
  • Edges and appendages. Rudders, shafts, brackets, intakes and the waterline are where failure starts, because they are where film is thinnest and where mechanical damage concentrates.

Where the runoff goes

Removing anti-fouling releases exactly what it was designed to release, all at once, in a concentrated form, next to the water. Doing it without containment is not a corner cut on cost; it is a discharge.

The practice here is straightforward and it is auditable. Blasting and washing are contained rather than open. Runoff is captured and filtered rather than allowed to reach the ground. Residues and spent media leave the site through a documented waste stream with a receipt at the end of it. The standard is applied for the same reason it is applied to the people on the scaffold: because there is no version of this work where it is acceptable to skip it.

It has a commercial dimension too. Owners increasingly need to be able to demonstrate, not assert, how their maintenance was carried out. A documented waste stream is one of the few environmental claims in this industry that can be evidenced on paper.

What we hand over

The system applied, the number of coats, the batch numbers, the conditions during application, the areas that were stripped versus overcoated, and the waste documentation. The same discipline as topside coating, applied to the half of the hull nobody photographs.
